About Abide
Abide is a free daily companion to the Mass readings. Each day it shows the readings with a short historical backdrop and a reflection on their meaning, written for any Christian, Catholic or not. It has no ads and nothing to buy.
The readings
The readings follow the lectionary used in Catholic dioceses of the United States. Every day's citations are checked by our editor before they appear. The official texts are always one tap away at the USCCB website. Citation data comes from the open catholic-daily-readings and catholic-readings-api projects.
The translation
Scripture in Abide is the Douay-Rheims Bible, Challoner revision (1899 American edition). It is in the public domain. Our text comes from eBible.org, which also distributes it as public domain. The lectionary at Mass in the US uses a different, copyrighted translation (the NABRE), which Abide does not reproduce.
The Douay-Rheims follows the older Greek and Latin numbering, so some citations differ: most Psalms are numbered one lower (Psalm 23 is Psalm 22), and a few books divide verses differently. Abide maps each citation to the matching Douay-Rheims verses and notes when the numbering differs. Versification data is from the United Bible Societies' versification_json (MIT License).
The commentary
The historical backdrops, reflections and Explore pages are prepared outside the app. Every piece is reviewed, and edited where needed, by our editor before it is published, and nothing appears until it is approved. The commentary aims to be rooted in established, broadly shared Christian teaching and to mark where scholars disagree.
Not an official publication
Abide is an independent project. It is not an official publication of the Catholic Church, the USCCB or any diocese, and its commentary carries no imprimatur.
